Underbuying is the most common mistake — most people estimate from a rough perimeter guess instead of measuring precisely around the block layout itself, and on a 36-inch pit that gap alone is four or five blocks per course.

Shape & Dimensions

  1. Pick your project — Fire Pit or Planter. Planters get a soil estimate; fire pits get a fire ring option.
  2. Pick a shape — Circular, Square, or Rectangular. The fields change to match: diameter for round, length for square, length and width for rectangular.
  3. Measure the inside, not the outside. Enter the open space you want; the calculator adds the block thickness itself.
  4. Set Number of Rows — how many courses high. Three rows of 8″ block gives a 24″ wall.

Wall & Capstone Blocks

  1. Choose Block Size — 4″, 6″, or 8″ CMU (all 8×16 face), or Retaining Wall Block (6″ high × 12″ long, 8″ deep). Shorter blocks mean more units per course.
  2. Set Waste Percentage — 5% for a simple ring, more for square and rectangular builds that need corner cuts.
  3. Tick extras — cap stones adds a finishing course; fire ring adds a steel liner sized to your opening (fire pits only).

Safety

Keep a fire pit 15–20 feet from any structure, fence, or overhanging branches, and check local fire codes first. Never use plain CMU as the inner face of a wood fire without a steel liner or firebrick — trapped moisture can make block crack or spall when heated.

How We Calculate

Blocks Per Course
Formula: Outer Perimeter (in) ÷ Block Length (in) = Blocks Per Course Circular: Perimeter = π × (Inner Diameter + 2 × Block Depth) Square: Perimeter = 4 × (Inner Side + 2 × Block Depth) Rectangular: Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width + 4 × Block Depth)
We measure around the outer face of the ring, because that’s the line the blocks actually follow. A 4 ft round pit in 8″ CMU has a 5.33 ft outer diameter and a 201-inch perimeter, giving 201 ÷ 16 = 13 blocks per course.
Total Blocks
Formula: Blocks Per Course × Rows × (1 + Waste ÷ 100) = Total Blocks
Rounded up to whole blocks. Wall height comes from block height × rows — three rows of 8″ CMU gives 24″, while a 6″-high retaining wall block gives 18″.
Cap Stones
Formula: Outer Perimeter ÷ Block Length = Cap Stones
One finishing course around the same perimeter, plus waste, rounded up. Set with masonry adhesive rather than mortar.
Gravel Base
Formula: (Pad Area × 4 in) ÷ 27 = Gravel (yd³)
A compacted pad 4 inches deep, extending 6 inches past the blocks on every side. Weight converts at 1.4 tons per cubic yard, so you can order by volume or by weight.
Planting Soil (planters only)
Formula: Inner Area × (Wall Height − 2 in) = Soil Volume
Filled to 2 inches below the rim as freeboard, so soil doesn’t wash over the edge when watered. Shown in cubic yards and 1.5 ft³ bags. An 8×4 ft bed at three courses needs 2.17 yd³, about 40 bags.
Fire Ring Insert (fire pits only)
Formula: Inner Diameter − 2 in = Ring Diameter
The steel liner sits 2 inches inside the opening for clearance, and its height matches your wall. A 4 ft pit takes a 46-inch ring.
Waste Factor
Formula: Raw Quantity × (1 + Waste ÷ 100) = Order Quantity
Applied to blocks, cap stones, and gravel. Blocks and bags round up to whole units; gravel volume and tonnage stay as decimals so you can order a partial load.

Cap Block Calculation Example

For a 36-inch pit with 8 blocks per top course, add 8 cap blocks (one per block position) to finish the wall — cap blocks are ordered separately from wall blocks and typically add 10-15% more waste allowance due to precision cutting at the curve.

Gravel Base & Depth

A standard gravel base runs 4 to 6 inches deep, extending slightly beyond the outer edge of your block layout for stability and drainage.

Recommended Fire Pit Height

Most builds use 2, 3, or 4 courses: 2 courses (about 8 inches) suits low, decorative pits; 3 courses (12–16 inches) is the most common backyard height; 4 courses (16–20 inches) suits taller, wind-sheltered designs.

Wood-Burning vs Gas Fire Pits

Wood-burning pits need an open top and enough interior depth for airflow and ash cleanup. Gas fire pits typically require a smaller footprint but need extra space inside the block ring for a burner pan and gas line — check burner specifications before finalizing block count.
